The enthusiastic response to my various recitals in Southwold over the last few years prompted me to consider concerts here on a more regular basis. I am delighted that these ideas have come to fruition with the Southwold Concert Series, now entering its second full year. The aim of the series is simple: music making of the very highest level ‘in your own back yard’. I have always believed that a local, grass-roots connection between artist and audience, rather than the ‘top-down’ approach of many artists, leads to the most enjoyable and potent musical experiences. It needs no compromise on quality and results in more direct communication between the performer and listener. It is on this basis that we launched the series. The catalyst behind it is the tremendous support of our sponsors: Spring and Adnams, each of whom lend their own expertise in a huge variety of ways. I am delighted that these local businesses are willing to offer their support and I am completely indebted to them all for their enthusiasm and commitment. After a launch event in October 2008 our first full season, from September 2009 to June 2010, programmed six full-length recitals including solo and chamber works, vocal recitals and semi-stagings of opera, given by some of the finest artists of their generation from the UK and abroad. The repertoire was varied and contained a considerable amount of new music, the blend of the contemporary with the more familiar being another constant in the series' programmes. I hope that this Concert Series will be the beginning of a wonderful musical resource in Southwold, and that you will enjoy all the music that we have to offer.
